Call For papers Special Issue on: Mental Health and Development
World Review of Science, Technology and Sustainable Development (WRSTSD)
Guest Editor Andrew Crabtree, Copenhagen Business School, Denmark
According to the Global Burden of Disease estimates, 25% of the world’s population suffer from mental or behavioral disorders at some stage during their lives. Mental and neurological disorders account for 12.3% of the total Disability Adjusted Life Years and for 30.8% of Years Lived with a Disability. The social and economic costs are high. The various dimensions of poverty – lack of income, ill health, poor nutrition and poor education – are both causes of and results of mental disorders.
Despite this, mental health issues are largely absent from the development debate. Good mental health is not a Millennium Development Goal, it is rarely mentioned in the World Bank’s Poverty Reduction Strategy Papers which outline poor countries policies and priorities. At country level, only 62.1% of the world’s countries have a mental health policy. 62% of low income countries spend less than 1% of their health budgets on mental health. National mental health programs, disability benefits, substance abuse policies and specified budgets for mental health are often absent. Furthermore, research into mental health issues in developing countries is limited – a limitation that this special issue seeks to address.

Call for contributions on the topic of "Consulting for Business Sustainability"
Greenleaf Publishing invites contributions for a new series, Consulting for Business Sustainability, to be edited by Dr Chris Galea. Dr Galea is a professor at the Gerald Schwartz School of Business and Information Systems, St Francis Xavier University, Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada.
As new areas of corporate challenges emerge, companies that find themselves on unfamiliar ground often turn to the expertise of leading-edge practitioners - consultants that have spotted those emerging trends and have positioned themselves ahead of the curve.
This is precisely where practitioners in the field of Sustainable Business Consulting are finding themselves. The strategic and business challenges posed by sustainability are now here to stay; their impact on a firm's profitability is no longer in dispute. In fact, many firms are now waking up to the emerging reality that the demands of sustainability may actually threaten their very business models. Conversely, those very same threats could also be the basis for developing new competitive advantages. Amidst the resulting confusion has emerged a growing plethora of consulting services aimed at helping managers navigate through the confusing morass of issues, challenges and possibilities posed by sustainability.
In light of this, Greenleaf Publishing is inviting leading practitioners and researchers in the field to contribute new perspectives to this vital topic. The publication will outline the growth and development of the industry, its current breadth and scope, give guidance to those who actively commission consulting services, and finally outline the future direction that the industry is heading towards.
Scope of the Text
While the scope of the publication will evolve as authors submit their material, we currently envision five key sections. Though all related material will be considered, we invite contributions that address the following specific areas:
Part 1. Sustainable Business Consulting: where we have come from and where we are today
Part 2. Sustainable Business Consulting: current best practice
Part 3. Sustainable Business Consulting: the parts that make up the whole
Part 4. Sustainable Business Consulting: the view from the receiving end
Part 5: The future of Sustainable Business Consulting
Revised Schedule
Authors are invited to propose topics and ideas (in the form of an abstract or outline of 300-500 words) to the Editor via email. The deadline to do so is 15 September 2007.

Describe what practice exists in CSR being implemented at the local level
Assess the relevance, extent, and effectiveness of current activity
Assess whether further activity is possible and desirable
Make recommendations as to what should be done to further develop local CSR by the European Commission, by other public organisations, by enterprise, and by non-governmental organisations
Presentations & Material From the “Rhetoric and Realities - Corporate Social Responsibility in Europe” Conference Now Available
The 27 June 2007 conference on Coprorate Social Responsibility brought to a close the research project “Rhetoric and Realities: Analysing Corporate Social Responsibility in Europe” (RARE). The three year research study examined whether Corporate Social Responsibility can lead to genuine impacts on society and the environment or whether CSR is merely rhetorical presentation. It was funded by the European Union carried out by a consortium of seven European research institutes which examined four CSR issues across three business sectors. The findings of the RARE project were presented at the conference by researchers and were discussed by experts and practitioners of CSR.
The main themes of the conference were:
What CSR sustainability impacts can be found in selected business sectors: banking, oil and fisheries?
To what extent does CSR contribute to achieving current EU sustainability goals, especially with regard to the mitigation of climate change, chemicals policy, sustainable fisheries, gender equality and countering bribery?
What are the limits of the contribution of CSR to sustainability? What factors foster or hamper the creation of CSR impacts?
What are the consequences and recommendations for further development of the EU’s CSR policy and research?

We are very pleased to unveil today the Provisional Programme for the EABIS 6th Annual Colloquium (20-21 Sept, ESADE Business School, Barcelona), the world’s largest business-academic-stakeholder gathering on corporate responsibility issues in knowledge development and learning. This year’s conference takes as its theme “The Emerging Global Governance Paradigm: The Role of Business and its Implications for Companies, Stakeholders and Society".
A Pioneering Examination Of Global Governance
The 2007 Programme demonstrates how deeply this year’s Colloquium will look at the core issues of global governance and the role of business. We have structured the event around five exceptional content sessions: four plenary debates and the Education & Training Exchange, which will profile 30 best practices in management development from around the globe.
The pivotal plenary sessions link together to address the major issues in global governance from four different but vital perspectives:
The Context of Global Governance and the Role of Business in Society
New Forms of Global Governance – Self Regulation, Voluntary Standards and Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships
Business, Global Governance and Global Issues – The Challenges and Opportunities of Climate Change
New Kinds of Leadership for Global Governance and the Implications for Management Development

EABIS Members Featuring Prominently at World's Largest Academic Gathering
We are pleased to acknowledge the significant contributions that the EABIS Academic Network will make to the international corporate responsibility research domain at the upcoming Academy of Management 2007 Annual Conference ("Doing Well by Doing Good"), the world’s largest academic gathering around management knowledge development and research.
Prominent Platforms for EABIS Members
We briefly wanted to draw attention to some of the Network-related highlights of the conference. The first of these is a prestigious Academy Symposium session for EABIS’ RESPONSE Project, the world’s largest research activity on corporate responsibility and strategic stakeholder management. Research Director Maurizio Zollo (INSEAD) will discuss the early findings of the project, which was actively supported by our corporate founding partners – IBM, Johnson & Johnson, Microsoft, Shell and Unilever – and funded by the EU Commission.
Other EABIS academic members playing key roles include Ans Kolk (Director of Research, Amsterdam), who will chair a session on global business and climate change policy, and Martin Hall (Deputy Vice Chancellor, Cape Town), who will moderate a session on BOP strategies and practices. We also want to acknowledge IESE, the Center for Creative Leadership, University of Nottingham and University of Waikato for their strong engagement in the organization of pre-conference Professional Development Workshops.

Finally, the EABIS central team will be represented by Executive Director Peter Lacy, who will speak during one of the major plenary sessions of the conference on “Corporations and the 21st Century: How Do Today’s Companies Need to Change to Meet Tomorrow’s Need?", alongside distinguished colleagues such as Simon Zadek, Jane Nelson, James Post, Allen White and Mark Goyder.
The Tip of the Iceberg
These honorable mentions are not exhaustive as they were compiled in line with corporate responsibility issues and debate. We therefore wish to congratulate all of our Members who will feature in the programme, representing their institutions across all management disciplines in an amazing number of fora. We strongly encourage those attending the conference to consider the referenced sessions and presentations as you define your programmes.
