ESRC Case Studentship Opportunity

Applications are invited for an ESRC CASE (+3) Studentship in Geography at the School of Environment and Development, University of Manchester, jointly supervised by Dr Neil Coe and Professor Kevin Ward along with the respective CASE partner.

This project offers exciting opportunities to explore the changing nature of labour markets and patterns of migrations in the European Union at a time of unparalleled dynamism and expansion. As such, they should appeal to researchers in a broad range of social science disciplines. They also offer the opportunity to be part of the vibrant Geographical Political Economy Research Group (GPERG) at Manchester.

The institutional context for temporary staffing: a European cross- national comparative study.

Collaborating partner: Peter Siderman, The Adecco Institute

This three year doctoral project will explore the role of temporary staffing agencies within the wider landscape of public and private sector labour intermediaries, and how and why this differs from country to country. Three national political-economic systems will provide illustrative case studies: The UK – a neoliberal policy environment in which labour markets are characterised by short-term employment relationships, low levels of unionisation and individualised and competitive employment relations; Germany – a corporatist policy regulatory context characterised by significant human capital investment, medium-term employment relationships and strong union representation in a tripartite system; The Czech Republic – a post-socialist labour regime that has undergone profound and rapid change since 1990, and in which a central command economy has moved somewhat unevenly towards a flexible, market-based labour regime.

In particular, research will investigate how the role of placing people into employment is undertaken by different combinations of private and public sector agencies and intermediaries in the different regimes.
This cross-national comparative study will combine both quantitative and qualitative methodologies, and use both primary and secondary data. The project will offer considerable potential for international fieldwork and research, and applicants with experience of that kind are advised to make this clear in their application.

EABIS To Play Global Role In Major UN Initiative

We are very pleased to share with you some positive news regarding EABIS’ active engagement with a major UN Global Compact initiative.

A Global Collaboration to Shape Future Generations of Leaders
On July 5, at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, the EABIS network was invited to join a distinguished group to lead the implementation phase of the UNGC Principles for Responsible Management Education.

Modelled on the original UNGC Principles for Business, these call for business schools and universities worldwide to build corporate responsibility issues into their Purpose, Values, Method, Research, Partnerships and Dialogue. Click here to read them in full.

Highlighting their relevance in his closing remarks on 6 July, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon commented: “The Principles […] have the capacity to take the case for universal values and business into classrooms on every continent”.

World’s Major Management Development Institutions to Drive Progress Together
This high-level initiative will look to shape a new global agenda on corporate responsibility and management development. The role will mean EABIS working closely alongside 5 of the world’s most influential organisations to design and implement further consultations and the roll-out process:

  • Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB)
  • European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD)
  • Globally Responsible Leadership Initiative (GRLI)
  • Aspen Institute Business in Society Program
  • Net Impact First Steps:

An Unveiling in Barcelona
As a first tangible step, EABIS will organise the European launch of the Principles on the eve of the Annual Colloquium (September 19, ESADE Business School). This official unveiling will take place with the close support of the UN Global Compact team and senior representatives from the group of co-convening organizations. We cordially invite all of you to join us!

Executive Director Peter Lacy – one of the formal presenters of the Principles to Ban Ki-Moon – noted: “The launch of the UN Principles represents a unique moment for management education globally and a chance to build a platform for responsible and sustainable future leaders in developed, emerging and developing countries. EABIS is proud to have been recognised for our work by the UN by being included in this founding group, alongside the world's top institutions, and we look forward to working with and engaging the network’s members in the next phase”.

The New England Journal of Entrepreneurship is published twice annually by the John F. Welch College of Business at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Connecticut. The objective of the journal is to be aforum for exchange of scholarly ideas, practices and policies in the field of entrepreneurship and small business management. The Journal seeks contributions relating to Entrepreneurship Education that fall within one or more of the following four tracks: Visionary Articles, Theory Articles, Critical Issues Articles, and Nuts & Bolts Articles. Submissions must be received by April 30, 2008.

Visionary Articles: “Some people see things as they are and ask ‘Why?’ I dream of things that never were and ask, ‘Why not?’”

Submissions to this track should briefly review the following:

  1. the variety of approaches used in programs/courses on Entrepreneurship, and acknowledge
  2. the strengths and the limitations of these approaches. Submissions will then proceed to articulate
  3. what could/should be achieved in Entrepreneurship programs/courses of the near future.

The only limitation to contributions for this track is that the vision must be implementable by a typical business school (i.e. authors should not assume unlimited resources will suddenly be available to all business schools) and achievable by typical business students (i.e. authors should not assume that all students can suddenly be molded into successful, high-potential entrepreneurs).

Theory Articles: Submissions to this track should build on existing theories from other disciplines (e.g. economics, sociology, psychology, or political science) and reinterpret them in terms of theories applicable to entrepreneurship education. Theory articles that expand upon our understanding of the interdisciplinary nature of entrepreneurship and the challenges this presents for entrepreneurship education are welcome.

Critical Issues Articles: Submissions to this track should deal with an issue that is critical to Entrepreneurship Education. Topics may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Entrepreneurship Education: Issues Affecting Youths, Minorities, Women, and/or Senior Citizens
  • Entrepreneurship Education: Issues Affecting Ph.D. Students
  • Measuring Outcomes: What Are/Should Be the Measures of Success for Entrepreneurship Education
  • Models for Improving Student Exposure to the Sources of Ideas for New Businesses
  • Career Advice for Students Aspiring to Be Entrepreneurs
  • Models for Entrepreneurship Education & Training in Countries with Authoritarian Regimes (e.g. North Korea) Seeking to Transition to Market Economies. (Articles that can draw empirically or anecdotally from cases/experiences in former satellite states of the Soviet Union or from Latin America are especially welcome).

Nuts & Bolts Articles Submissions to this track should deal with an issue that is essential to the delivery of superior Entrepreneurship courses. Topics may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Accommodating Different Modes of Learning in Entrepreneurship Courses
  • Teaching Technoentrepreneurship to [non-technical] Business Majors
  • Teaching Lifestyle Entrepreneurship to non-Business majors
  • Models for Collaborating with University Technology Transfer Offices for the Delivery of Courses on Technology Commercialization & Entrepreneurship
  • Teaching Entrepreneurship through Entrepreneurship Centers/Models for Collaborating with Entrepreneurship Centers for the Delivery of Courses on Entrepreneurship
  • Micro-businesses and Courses on Entrepreneurship/Incubators as Vehicles for Learning By Doing
  • Motivating Entrepreneurship Students to Discard Strategies of Doing the Least Amount of Work in Order to Get the Highest Possible Grade in Favor of Adopting a Strategy of Studying Hard Enough and Producing Well-Enough to Succeed in the Real World
  • Challenges to Teaching Entrepreneurship

Manuscripts should be sent as an MS Word file via email to:

EABIS and INSEAD-Led Consortium Announce RESPONSE Project Conference For October 12.

EABIS is pleased to invite you to the final conference of the RESPONSE “Understanding and Responding to Societal Demands on Corporate Responsibility” Project, the world’s largest research project on corporate responsibility and strategic stakeholder management. RESPONSE is the EABIS network’s flagship research initiative, receiving € 1.1 million of funding from the EU Commission’s FP6 Programme and supported by EABIS’ corporate founding partners – IBM, Johnson & Johnson, Microsoft, Shell and Unilever.

Why Attend?

The RESPONSE Project findings and recommendations have a strong and resonant message to communicate to all interested parties. The conference will offer participants, among other benefits:

  • Genuine thought leadership from company CEOs, senior policy makers and civil society leaders
  • In-depth dialogue on the implications of its findings for managers, stakeholders, policy makers and management educators
  • Debate on the future knowledge and learning agendas for business around stakeholder management themes
  • High level interaction and networking opportunities

Prominent speakers are expected to include:

  • Mario Monti, former EU Commissioner, President of Bocconi University
  • Jean Philippe Courtois, Chairman, Microsoft International
  • Richard Evans, CEO, Alcan (tbc)
  • Frank Brown, Dean, INSEAD
  • Simon Zadek, CEO, AccountAbility
  • Chris Marsden, Chair, Amnesty International Business Group
  • Gilbert Lenssen, President, EABIS
  • Peter Lacy, Executive Director, EABIS
  • Senior representatives of the EU Commission

What is RESPONSE?

Since 2004, the RESPONSE Project has been the flagship research initiative within the EABIS knowledge development and learning portfolio – a unique attempt to study systematically corporate responsibility as both an organisational practice and an individual behaviour. It was the first and principal research effort initiated by academic partners of EABIS and supported by its corporate founding partners (IBM, Johnson & Johnson, Microsoft, Unilever and Shell), who provided critical but constructive input to ensure a balance of academic rigour and managerial relevance.

Under the guidance of Academic Director Maurizio Zollo, RESPONSE has engaged 21 global companies and over 100 stakeholder organizations. Based on observations and data from 440 interviews and over 1,000 questionnaires, the research team has developed unique and novel insights on the factors distinguishing the leading innovators in corporate responsibility from other companies. In addition, the RESPONSE team conducted cutting-edge learning experiments to identify the most promising approaches to the problem of developing social consciousness in business managers.

The project sought to answer two crucial questions:

  • What do managers consider to be their company's responsibility towards society and how that differs from what societal actors consider the company's responsibility to be?
  • How do multi-national corporations attempt to respond to societal expectations and how effective is their response in enhancing the alignment between business and society?

Registration & Additional Information Registration for the event is now open online here.
For logistical details, please contact Catherine Billault at: Catherine.billault@insead.edu

For additional information on the RESPONSE Project, please visit the official website at: www.insead.edu/ibis/response_project or contact Professor Maurizio Zollo, Academic Director of RESPONSE at Maurizio.zollo@insead.edu.

We hope to see you in October at what promises to be a landmark event for the EABIS network and for future developments in the integration of corporate responsibility within business corporations’ operating and strategic processes.

The State of Responsible Competitiveness 2007: Making Sustainability Count in Global Markets is essentially a progress report on countries’ efforts in advancing competitiveness based on responsible business practices. The report was launched on July 6th at a special Ministerial Roundtable on the role of governments in promoting corporate citizenship at the UN Global Compact Leaders Summit, involving hundreds of chief executives, several heads of state, and more than 40 government ministers.

It includes a foreword from Al Gore and a dozen essays on responsible competitiveness from experts such as Sir Nicholas Stern (climate change), Laura Tyson (the gender gap), Jean-Philippe Courtois (ICT, social inclusion and competitiveness), Nick Butler (energy security), Peter Eigen (corruption) and Jonathan Lash (preparing for a carbon-constrained future), as well as key constituency views on the need for more assertive policies in advancing this agenda, including Anwar Ibrahim, AccountAbility’s Honorary President and Malaysia’s former Deputy Prime Minister and Günter Verheugen, European Commission’s Vice President for Enterprise.

The Responsible Competitiveness Index, covering 108 countries accounting for 96 per cent of global economic activity, blends 21 data streams from authoritative sources in assessing countries progress in advancing responsible business practices at the heart of their competitiveness strategies and practices.

The Index responds to some of these questions: Has US climate policy harmed its long-term competitiveness? Does Canada deserve its responsible reputation? Which is the sounder country to source from: Cambodia or China? Which Nordic country is less than squeaky clean? How do minerals exporters Zambia and Bolivia compare on labour standards?

The full report is now available on Accountability's website (www.accountability21.net) where you can also access sound material - podcasts - on the report by Accountcability's CEO & the Head of Programmes.
