'The State of Responsible Competitiveness' Report To Be Released From Accountability
Countries which fail to compete responsibly could miss out on their share of a market worth US$750 billion by 2050, or more than 1% of current global GDP. Factors such as climate change, gender, human rights, and anti-corruption will play an important role in shaping this market and in redefining business strategy in the future. This is one of the conclusions of a report to be launched at the UN Global Compact Leaders Summit in Geneva on the 6th July during a Ministerial roundtable by the research institute AccountAbility.
This State of Responsible Competitiveness report identifies major opportunities to build more responsible markets and gives a framework for policymakers and executives to improve their current strategy.
A unique health check on responsible globalization, the report includes a global ranking of 108 countries, accounting for 96 per cent of global economic activity. The index is based on 21 unique indicators, all taken from independent and reliable sources. The report is the culmination of seven years of research and analysis and carries essays from leading global experts like Sir Nicholas Stern, Laura Tyson, Guy Ryder and Günter Verheugen.
Al Gore, who wrote the foreword for the report, says:
"The State of Responsible Competitiveness 2007 is the definitive guide for policy makers and business leaders to understand how markets are reshaped to reward competitiveness for the 21st century."
Pascal Lamy, Director-General of the WTO said:
"The State of Responsible Competitiveness demonstrates the practical potential of responsible competitiveness strategies to deliver trade and investment on the ground that strikes the right balance between national and global interests, and public and private gain." Comprehensive indices like the Responsible Competitiveness Index (RCI) are increasingly used by investment banks and global retailers to guide their investment and purchasing decisions. The State of Responsible Competitiveness pinpoints the winners in the current line-up to compete responsibly.
"Just as importantly," says AccountAbility CEO and report co-author Dr Simon Zadek, "we show what each and every country can do to do better in global trade".

A newly-released white paper from the Aspen Institute on the Bottom of the Pyramid concept investigates how and why the BOP is being integrated into business school education. The brief is available for download in the Beyond Grey Pinstripes website: click here.
If you are looking for a place to receive feedback on an early draft of a paper related to business in society you can consider submitting your early work to the Interactive Working Paper Series, sponsored by the Center for Business as an Agent of World Benefit (B7A7W7B) at the Case Weatherhead School of Management.
The B.A.W.B. Interactive Working Paper Series is an open-access forum dedicated to showcasing papers that explore the potential for business to act as an agent of social, environmental, and economic benefit. Topics of interest include perspectives on corporate social responsibility, social entrepreneurship, strategies at the bottom of the pyramid, micro-enterprise, sustainability strategies, transformative management education, and innovative business partnerships. Papers that explore the mechanisms of how businesses can successfully create sustainable value, both for the company and for wider society, or that investigate how "doing good" is also "good business" are invited.
A distinctive feature of this forum is the ability for interaction between authors and readers. The purpose is developmental: the aim is to develop a community of support to help authors prepare their work for future publication in traditional journals. Both papers and reviews aim to be collaborative and transparent. All working papers are made available online for instant and free access. Authors are invited to publish a brief note in which they share their current thoughts and questions about the paper. An editorial review is posted with each work. Additional comments and reflections from readers are encouraged.
The interactive design supports the development of papers for future publication and the development of a community in which a free exchange of ideas promotes accelerated, deep thinking on a variety of topics related to the role of business in society.
The next deadline for consideration is September 1, 2007 (for appearance in the fall 2007 issue). Visit the Web site for more information about submission guidelines or contact one of the co-editors: David Bright or Lindsey Godwin .
Greenleaf Publishing is inviting contributions for a book, provisionally entitled Between the Market and the State: Corporate Responses to Climate Change to be edited by Dr Rory Sullivan (Head of Investor Responsibility, Insight Investment, UK).
In view of this case studies or broader analytical pieces are invited – on the following topics:
The regulatory/policy drivers – for example, the EU Emissions Trading Scheme or policy actions at the national or regional level – for corporations to take action to reduce their emissions, and the outcomes that have been achieved in terms of emissions reductions.
NGO or other stakeholders’ efforts – partnerships, campaigns, public policy lobbying – to encourage, stimulate or drive changes in corporate greenhouse gas emissions, and the relationship between these activities and public policy efforts directed at the same goal.
Individual or collective corporate initiatives directed at managing greenhouse gas emissions, including discussion of the motivations for action, the actions taken, the greenhouse gas emissions reductions achieved and the business/financial implications of taking action.
The manner in which regulatory, market and self-regulatory efforts – individually and collectively – influence corporate behaviour.
The manner in which corporate responses (compliance with policy targets, voluntary commitments to go beyond compliance, efforts to enhance green image) have influenced the shape of the policy response.
The above list is by no means exhaustive, and contributions on other relevant topics will also be considered. Given the intended practical nature of the publication, contributions from practitioners in businesses, social entrepreneurs, NGOs and government are very welcome.
Paper submissions should follow editorial guidelines, which can be obtained from Greenleaf Publishing. The deadline for abstract submission is 10 August 2007.
For additional information please visit the Greenleaf Publishing website here. To discuss ideas for contributions and to submit abstracts/manuscripts, please contact:

This major project has received strong support from the members’ network and has set out to generate a world-leading, state of the art online resource: the Public Directory that will give EABIS and EFMD members a dedicated profile on their leadership and innovation in these vital areas.
The Survey is being administered online for the first time, with each member School and University having received a unique access link through the office of their Dean or Director.

Addressing the INSEAD's INDEVOR Alumni Forum on Integrating CSR into Business Strategy in Fontainebleau, France, 25 May 2007 UNILEVER Group Chief Executive, Patrick Cescau put forward the agenda for corporate responsibility and environmental sustainability; stressing that today these are ‘core business competencies, not fringe activities’.
In this speech Unilever’s senior executive stresses three grounds and the role of business in the future: economic development, social innovation and sustainability. According to Mr. Cescau: ‘we have come to a point now where this agenda of sustainability and corporate responsibility is not only central to business strategy but will increasingly become a critical driver of business growth... I believe that how well and how quickly businesses respond to this agenda will determine which companies succeed and which will fail in the next few decades’.
In light of the growing complexity of current social and environmental challenges Mr. Cescau underlines solutions suggested collaboratively between government, NGOs and industry.
The complete speech is available for download on Unilever's website here.
