We are pleased to announce the public availability of the key deliverables from the 1 year project “The Changing Role of Government: The Relational State and its Implications for Corporate Responsibility” carried out by an international team of academics from:

  • ESADE Business School in Spain
  • SDA Bocconi School of Management in Italy
  • The Norwegian School of Management

The project was developed through EABIS’ unique Corporate Funded Research Programme, sponsored by founding partners IBM, Johnson & Johnson, Microsoft, Shell and Unilever.

This research project focused on government positions on promoting CR, with a comparative examination of existing policies in Italy, the United Kingdom and Norway. The outputs of the project are a significant contribution to the work of academics and practitioners aiming to understand the different public policy systems and approaches that exist in Europe and how these correlate to the development and integration of “responsible” business practices.

  • A complete list of research outputs is now available through the EABIS website. For more information, please click here.

We encourage you to share this material with colleagues who can benefit from this examination of the Changing Role of Government in Corporate Responsibility.

The Next Great Transformation: Sustainable Enterprise - Call for Ideas, Stories, Innovations and Papers

EABIS, in its role as supporting partner, is delighted to introduce you to the conference ‘The Next Great Transformation: Sustainable Enterprise’ - A Conversation About The Future taking place at the Eden Project in Cornwall, England from 24 to 26 October 2007, co-organized by the Coventry University Allied Center in Human Security, the UN Global Compact, the Eden Project and the Winston Center for Leadership and Ethics and Center for Corporate Citizenship of the Boston College. The conference is sponsored by Shell International and also supported by the Journal of Corporate Citizenship, Business as an Agent for World Benefit, the European Academy of Business In Society (EABIS) and Business Leaders Initiative for Human Rights.

A better understanding of complex dynamics and systems is required for a sustainable enterprise economy, particularly fragile eco-systems but also human society. Both transcend traditional territorial boundaries and established institutional social mechanisms. Facing the problems our current way of thinking has created, such as global warming and global terrorism, we must use our newfound knowledge to create a paradigm shift to a more equitable global socio-ecological situation.

The conference aims to explore new models, new systems, new policies and new strategies for this century and share the most brilliant, innovative practice around the world on sustainable enterprise. The conversation will take the form of a few provocative keynote speakers but there will be plenty of space for open and structured conversations in parallel and plenary sessions. A Roundtable in Sustainable Enterprise involving representatives form business, government, NGOs, academia and others has been meeting in London and will report on its findings during the event.

The conference seeks innovative ideas about how to build a more just and sustainable world in a way that will allow for the next great transformation. Sustainable enterprise pioneers, interesting thinkers, business, government, agencies, NGOs, and academics are invited to send their Ideas, Innovations, Stories and abstracts for Papers.

Please click here for the Call for Papers and for further information on the programme and registration details. The deadline for submissions is 2 May 2007.

EABIS is pleased to invite you to participate in this research workshop organised by the Institute of Governance and Public Management of Warwick Business School and scheduled to take place Wednesday, 30 May 2007 at Warwick Business School.

The event will serve as an important preliminary platform for the 6th EABIS Annual Colloquium (September 20-21, ESADE Business School, Barcelona), which will take as its theme “Global Governance and the Role of Business in Society”.

The workshop presents academics and engaged stakeholders with three outstanding opportunities around Global (Economic) Governance:

    • To help shape and enhance a more specialised knowledge and learning agenda
    • To contribute to the knowledge development and learning recommendations that will be streamed back to the European Commission to inform the FP7 Framework Programme
    • To engage with faculty members from the Social Sciences and Humanities for an interdisciplinary exchange of ideas, knowledge and perspectives

Gathering a selected group of academics and stakeholders from business, government and civil society with an acknowledged expertise, the workshop will allow in depth discussion on the following key questions:

    • How can governments share their responsibility for public space?
    • How can corporations accept democratic accountability - especially at global level where there is no demos?
    • Is there a public sphere beyond the state, and if so who populates it? What is the equivalent to those questions at global level? How does government gain access to global public space?
    • Are MNCs the only global citizens?

    Participation and Registration Details

The workshop will have a limited number of participants to allow for effective dialogue and strong interaction between the participants. Priority for attendance will be given to those who have related work or ideas to contribute to the dialogue.

If your current work addresses the above issues and questions and believe you could enhance the content of the workshop, please pre-register by completing the Participation Request Form available on the event website but no later than Monday 16 April 2007. You will be informed of your selection by Friday 20 April.

As it forms part of the "CSR Platform" Project, led by the European Academy of Business in Society (EABIS) and funded by the European Union's 6th Framework Programme, participation is free of charge. Please note that travel and accommodation costs for participants will not be covered.

EABIS Members are invited to express interest in participating at the above Special Interest Group (SIG), which is being held on Wednesday 28th March 2007 at the Department of Trade and Industry Conference Centre in London.

This ACUA SIG event sets-out to explicate the factors that are shaping the quality of corporate university and academy interventions and promote a code of best practice. The SIG introduces three key-note speakers whose knowledge and experience is at the leading edge in dealing with the issues and factors in and around the subject area. Their presentations will define interesting considerations in the design of a code practice for business inspired training, education and situation learning, for example, between Europe and the USA and in the UK.

    The 3 Keynote Speakers are:

    • Dr. Bianka Lichtenberger, Managing Director, FIBAA www.fibaa.com
“Quality Assessment in the Design and Management of Corporate Universities”
    • David Rose - MD Innovation Associates & Ecuanet Contract Manager www.ecuanet.info
“Developing and accrediting best practice - how and why”
    • Brian Stevens, Director FEdS Consultancy Limited www.signposterprogramme.co.uk
“Policy Interface dynamics: the need for change – using the Goodison Group and the Signposter Programme as exemplars”

All SIG delegates will have the opportunity to add their experience and comment on the way forward in establishing quality standards that will underpin a corporate university professional accreditation methodology that is commensurate with the challenges posed by the dynamics of global competition.

Full details for the event can be found at www.corporateuniversity.org.uk/acua/events.htm

Places will be limited, so please respond as soon as possible if you are interested in naming a delegate.
