New EABIS Team Members and a Fond Farewell!

Since the last issue of the Newszine EABIS has welcomed two new interns into its central team, while bidding farewell to Simone Poutnik, our former intern and Education & Training Exchange CoordinatorIn terms of new faces, Jeroen Wijnants currently holds the position of Communications and Coordination Intern, having completed a Masters of Science degree in Business and Community Studies at the University of Bath where he graduated in the top five percent of his class in terms of academic performance. His keen interest in issues linking the fields of business in society and corporate responsibility have been developing through his academic training since 2001, supported by an earlier B.A. in Business and Management from the University of Reading. He was Class Representative in the MSc programme at Bath, leading various sustainability-related initiatives, and while of Dutch nationality he has lived, studied and worked internationally for a number of years. This is clearly reflected in his passion for cross-cultural communication, having developed the ability to communicate fluently in 5 languages.

In addition, this December has seen the arrival of Isabel Gaisbauer, a recent graduate from the University of Twente where she earned a Masters in Public Policy and Administration (concentration in European Studies and Sustainable Development). Of Dutch and Austrian heritage, Isabel has combined her studies with a range of eclectic, challenging internships at institutions ranging from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime in Vienna to the Prip Trust NGO in Bangladesh.

On another note, we would like to inform members that Simone has started along a new career path in recent weeks. Having left EABIS in October after 18 months of sterling service to the organisation, Simone has earned a position as a Freelance Consultant with the Centre for Sustainability and Excellence. We would like to thank her for her dedication and invaluable contribution to the EABIS cause and wish her much success in the future.

EABIS, Durham Business School and Springer Publishing Launch Special Issue of Journal of Business Ethics on SMEs & CSR: Identifying the Knowledge Gaps

As a follow-up to the event organized by Durham Business School and EABIS on December 15-16, 2005 on the theme of “SMEs and CSR: Identifying the Knowledge Gaps”, we are pleased to announce the launch of a special edition of the Journal of Business Ethics from Springer Publishing with Guest Editors Geoff Moore (Durham) and Laura Spence (Brunel Business School, UK).

This special edition, edited by Prof. Geoff Moore (Durham Business School) and Dr. Laura Spence (Brunel Business School) comes at an important time for policy-makers, as the European Commission and many national governments in Europe look to support entrepreneurship and innovation to create more and better jobs and further economic competitiveness. The journal constitutes the first major deliverable to emerge from the emergent EABIS work stream around SMEs, entrepreneurship and corporate responsibility issues – one that has also incorporated a dedicated track at the 2006 Colloquium, an enormously successful October 26 event hosted by Copenhagen Business School, a European Knowledge & Learning Network sponsored by the EABIS Corporate Funded Programme, and input to EFMD’s respected “EntreNews” publication.

Along with Geoff and Laura’s editorial, the issue features 7 in-depth articles, including contributions from EABIS members Josep Maria Lozano & David Murillo (ESADE), Francesco Perrini (SDA Bocconi), as well as other engaged participants in the EABIS knowledge network including Jan Lepoutre & Aimé Heene (Ghent University) and David Williamson and Gary Lynch-Wood (University of Manchester ).

The Journal is unfortunately not available to be hosted on the EABIS website. A limited number of hard copies are available from the EABIS office in Brussels (e-mail Jeroen.wijnants@eabis.org or call +32 2541 1615). For more information via Springer Publishing please click here.

Gilbert Lenssen Invited to Join Elite European Business Awards Judging Panel

We are very pleased to inform you that EABIS, in the form of our President Gilbert Lenssen, has recently participated in the 2006 European Business Awards, one of the most important initiatives to recognise and honour excellence in contemporary corporate practices. Thanks to his own unique business-academic background and the pioneering work being done at EABIS, Gilbert was invited to join the select international judging panel of business executives, thought-leaders and public figures to identify this year’s winner of the AXA Award for Corporate Sustainability, sponsored by the AXA Group.

Completely independent and supported by organisations driving change in business practice such as EABIS, the European Business Awards are a mirror of what was originally a UK-based initiative, the National Business Awards. Against a backdrop of substantial changes in economic diversity and complexity since the 1990s, this programme was expanded to celebrate European companies or business leaders who have achieved outstanding performance in one of eight separate categories, including entrepreneurship, customer focus, innovation, growth strategy and sustainability.

The initiative has been shaped and guided over a number of years by a group of senior European leaders in their respective fields, including Viscount Etienne Davignon, Chairman of the EABIS Supervisory Board, former Dutch PM Wim Kok, Fortis CEO Jean-Paul Votron and World Economic Forum MD Ged Davis. Other EABIS member institutions feature on the prestigious Strategic Advisory Panel, through Professors Ulrich Steger, Director of the Corporate Sustainability Management (CSM) Forum at IMD in Lausanne, David Midgley from INSEAD and Niels Björn-Andersen from Copenhagen Business School.

The AXA Award for Corporate Sustainability is given to an organisation that best demonstrates a company-wide commitment to sustainable practices. The judges look for evidence of a clearly expressed and widely communicated corporate sustainability strategy with a main focus on actions launched to manage risk prevention from a commercial, environmental, governance and social development perspective above and beyond the requirements set by legislation. The prize will be announced at a special conference and ceremony on 31 January, 2007.

Call for Contributions
EABIS and Cranfield School of Management are currently conducting an extensive mapping of existing research and knowledge in business in society and corporate responsibility literature. This is being accomplished through a rigorous global and European review of 45 specialist journals, 20 practitioner organisations, conference outputs and doctoral research. An in-depth analysis of this mapping’s outputs will indicate the state of the art in these fields and help to identify the gaps that future research may fill.

As part of this exercise – one of Europe’s largest such undertakings – we kindly request PhD supervisors and candidates to submit approved work and literature reviews to the project’s data set in support of our four primary objectives:

  • To map the state of academic and relevant practitioner research in the field of Business in Society with a view to inform the European Commission and guide further research
  • To compare the findings from this mapping with the issues, themes and priorities of leading initiatives, e.g. CSR Europe Roadmap, UNGC Principles, WBCSD priorities focus of AOM divisions etc. with a view to assess how many/which issues and themes are covered by existing research and what are the gaps
  • To catalogue existing research
  • To contribute towards designing the 2nd EABIS European Survey on Business in Society in Education

Please send relevant contributions via e-mail to Researchmapping@yahoo.co.uk by Wednesday, 20 December.  Further information can be obtained from Dr. Lance Moir at Cranfield School of Management (l.moir@cranfield.ac.uk). Submissions should include:

EABIS and IESE Research In Public Domain: A New Paradigm for the "Bottom of the Pyramid"

How do social entrepreneurial initiatives create value? Can they compete with purely profit-driven business? Can they collaborate with them? If yes, then how? - We are very pleased to introduce you to some of the key deliverables and new knowledge and learning materials from “A New Paradigm for the Bottom of the Pyramid: Corporate-Entrepreneurship Partnerships for Customer-, Portfolio- and Market-Development”, a 1-year research project led by Dr. Johanna Mair and Dr. Christian Seelos at IESE Business School.

This is the first step in a process to publicly disseminate all of the new knowledge and learning developed to date through the EABIS Corporate Funded Research Programme, sponsored by founding partners IBM, Johnson & Johnson, Microsoft, Shell and Unilever. This programme constitutes a unique interface between leading global companies and top European business schools and research centres to further the debate on the role of business in society and bring corporate responsibility issues into the mainstream of management education and practice.

The IESE “Bottom of the Pyramid” research project focused on an in-depth examination of developing countries as potential new markets for corporations. Entering and creating markets at the Bottom of the Pyramid allows companies to develop their future customers and rethink their product/service offerings. In addition they are able to make a tangible contribution towards meeting the UN Millennium Development Goals. We strongly encourage readers to take a good look at this fascinating and thought-provoking research and to communicate it to colleagues interested in Bottom of the Pyramid issues such as developing market business models, corporate partnership and social entrepreneurship.

A complete list of research outputs from the IESE project is now available through the EABIS website. For more information, please click here.
