AccountAbility’s Simon Zadek Wins Prestigious Book Award
Dr Simon Zadek, AccountAbility’s Chief
Executive, has been awarded the Academy
of Management’s 2006 Social Issues in Management Book Award
for his book, The Civil Corporation: the
New Economy of Corporate Citizenship. This prestigious award marks out this
book as the classic and most insightful exploration of contemporary
developments in responsible business practices and their implications for
business strategy and public policy. The Civil Corporation beat 145 international award entrants to
receive honours from the Academy
of Management - the
world’s leading network of business scholars. The book won the highly-prized Social
Issues in Management Division (SIM) Award.
Kathy Getz, Professor at American University ad
Chair of the 2006 SIM Book Award Committee, said in announcing the award at the
Academy of Management’s Annual Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia on 14th
August: “The scope of the book is broad: it looks at a new way to conceptualize
the corporation and how this new corporation fits in a potentially new
institutional order in the future. Simon appropriately criticizes extant
measurement practices for evaluating the quality of stakeholder
relationships…Practitioners and academics alike will find intriguing insights
in the book.”
Simon Zadek, commenting on the Award: “This is an
honour for me, of course, to receive an award previously won by intellectual
giants like Galbraith, Olsen and Rawls. But most significant is that it is the
first time that a book on contemporary developments in businesses role in
society has been recognised in this way by the world’s academic establishment,
which is a credit to the work of many practitioners and academics across the
world.” The Civil Corporation traces the emergence of contemporary
approaches to corporate responsibility and explores its implications for
business practice and broader governance. It introduces ‘civil regulation’ into
the modern lexicon, and connects stakeholder engagement, organisational
innovation and learning, and business strategy and practices. Crucially, it connects an
insightful vista of the broader landscape with a set of practical ‘do’s’ for
businesses and their stakeholders that have stood the test of time.
The Financial
Times review of the book concluded that: ‘The intricate analysis…makes a powerful
case for business to reassess their values, relationships and processes’. Ian Hargreaves, former Editor of The New
Statesman and the Independent
said of The Civil Corporation: “The future depends on our ability to manage
corporate ambition within a sustainable social and environmental framework.
Simon Zadek’s book is a huge contribution to understanding the mechanics of how
this problem might be successfully addressed”.

The Financial Times (15/09/06) covered the release of a notable report on Accountants and Sustainability, published by the Professional Accountants in Business (PAIB), committee of the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC). The report emphasizes the 'economics of sustainability' as a driving force in business fundamentals.
The report consists of a series of interviews with accountants from around the world demonstrating that "there can be no doubt that the whole issue of sustainability is moving rapidly up the priority list of professional accountants in business." Evident is that accountants around the world are embracing sustainability, reorganising thier processes and seeking to take a longer term perspective of the organisation.

The rate at which SE content is increasingly included in MBA curricula has been staggering, given the normal pace of change in academia. In this report, the authors identify some of the most interesting courses, case studies, and campus academic centers. Some tough questions remain, however, including the intellectual cohesion of the SE concept, its relevance to MBA education, and its ability to tackle the world’s toughest issues.
In addition to the report, EABIS member, IESE, also provides a SE course and does leading edge research on SE and the Bottom of the Pyramid, led by Johanna Mair. Relevant links:

Ashridge Student Jason Darrow Awarded the 2006 Ashridge MBA Essay Award
Ashridge Business School, EABIS and Microsoft are very happy to announce and congratulate the winner of the 2006 Ashridge Best European MBA Essay Award, Jason Darrow, a full-time MBA student at Ashridge and the first ever winner from the school since it created the Award eight years ago. The 2006 competition is also the first time that EABIS founding partner Microsoft has sponsored the award.
This year’s Award challenged European MBA students to submit thought-provoking essays on the responsibilities of business within the broader context of a knowledge economy. Darrow’s winning entry, entitled “How can I be expected to understand all this?” argues that given the new complexity of global business, business education needs to help future leaders and managers develop the skills to meet contemporary challenges such as geo-political movements and global resource sustainability.

Call for Contributors: Information, Communication and Education on Climate Change
Climate change is a matter of global concern and not solely a European issue.
However, it is seen that there is a need to discuss and document
the initiatives at present being undertaken in Europe, a region with a
diversity of industrialised countries, in order to tackle the challenges
associated with climate mitigation and adaptation in a European scale. As
part of the Interreg IIIB project ASTRA
(http://www.astra-project.org/cms/), this book will pay an
equal attention to both mitigation and adaptation measures and will provide
reactive and pro-active messages which may guide reactions and follow-up
action to deal with what is one of the European – and indeed the world´s -
most pressing problems. The book will: Present a review of the approaches and
methods to inform, communicate and educate the public on climate change;
Introduce initiatives, projects and communication strategies undertaken by
governments, NGOs, universities, schools and industry with a view to
informing different stakeholders and raising awareness on climatechange issues; and, Promote the “Pan-Baltic climate change adaptation
and mitigation strategy” document and disseminate some of the
on-going initiatives today in Europe, with an emphasis on positive and
inspiring messages, aimed at encouraging more personal involvement in climate
change issues and inspiring more work in this field. Around 30 chapters
written by representatives from European NGOs, research institutes,
educators, climate experts, media specialists and industry. The deadline for
submissions of expressions of interest for papers is 15th October 2006, and
the selection and commissioning of papers will be complete by 30th October
2006. For further information, please contact the editorial office: ASTRA
