EU Commission Launches CSR Policy with Research and Education Amongst Top Priorities
The
European Commission today published its new EU Communication on
CSR and plans for a European
Allianceon the topic. CSR Europe, founding partner of EABIS, has
been closely involved in both developments following its European Roadmap on CSR
in 2005. CSR Europe and EABIS Chair, Viscount Etienne Davignon joined
Commissioners Gunter Verheugen and Vladimir Spidla at the launch today, alongside a group of leading
European CEOs including several EABIS founding partner
companies.
Specifically
related to EABIS’ mission, the Communication and Business Alliance both stress
the crucial role and importance of knowledge development and learning on
corporate responsibility in companies and academia. “Research”
and “Education”
are highlighted as 2 of the 8 priority areas, with business schools and
universities given a key role and responsibility in achieving the EU’s goals.
Re-iterating
the importance that the Commission places on these issues and EABIS’ role in
leading the EU FP6 funded “European Platform for Excellence on CSR Research”
(CSR Platform), we were today approached by the Head of Social Science Research
Policy at the Commission, who has asked to present on the “EU’s FP7 research programme
in relation to CSR” during EABIS’ event at Eichstaett Business School in Germany on the 31st
March on the topic of research and reform in European higher education.
Pedro
Ortun, Director, DG Enterprise, and responsible for
the Commission’s CSR policies, will also share his thoughts on “Corporate
Responsibility and the Changing Role of Government” at the EABIS
event on 24th March in Barcelona hosted and led by ESADE alongside BI
Norway and SDA Bocconi as part of the EABIS Corporate
Funding Programme sponsored by founding partners Shell, Unilever, Microsoft, IBM
and J&J.
These are important and empowering messages for EABIS and
its members from the EU Commission and companies in advancing the role of
business in society through the creation of a generation of managers with the
knowledge, skills and values to deliver a competitive and sustainable European
enterprise model. It comes at an excellent time as we celebrate 3 years of
growth and success as a network and we look to the future at the EABIS Business Leaders
Forum on 28th April. We look forward to discussing how
we can build on this momentum with you.

New Chair of Corporate Social Responsibility for IESE
Dr.
Antonio Argandoña, pioneer and scholar in the field, to hold chair
IESE
Business School and "la Caixa" bank recently joined forces to form
the "la Caixa" Chair of Corporate Social Responsibility and Corporate
Governance, IESE’s latest research chair. Dr. Antonio Argandoña,
IESE economics professor and associate dean of the school, will hold the chair.
The bank's
philosophy involves investing profits in social, educational, scientific and
cultural projects. This is the first time that “la Caixa” has financed a
chair at a university. Sponsorship of the chair will go to support
research and other academic activities in the area of corporate social responsibility,
an area that is emphasized at IESE.
The
chair's mission is to generate and disseminate research and knowledge which
will contribute to academic debate, as well as management practice and
education. It will also support publications in specialized magazines, books,
etc, academic events (conferences, symposia, seminars, etc.) and activities for
businesses and managers.
The chair
will support courses in the MBA and Executive MBA programs on social
responsibility and corporate governance. It will also provide support to
courses already in place on similar topics, such as courses delivered by the
Center for Business in Society.
Dr. Argandoña is one of the leading pioneers in the
field of business ethics and social responsibility in Spain. At the core of his
work on business ethics and social responsibility is the impact of corruption
on companies, as well as the growth in stock options in companies, the
anthropological and ethical foundations of the economy, the use of ethics in
the elaboration of company strategy, the social dimension of the work
marketplace, and ethical investment funds. Among other things, he is a member
of the Paris-based Commission on Anti-Corruption of the International Chamber
of Commerce.
His activities in this sphere have placed him on the
editorial boards of some of the world’s most prestigious ethics-related
publications, among them the Journal of Business Ethics, Business Ethics
Quarterly, the Kluwer Series Issues in Business Ethics, Business Ethics: A
European Review, and the Journal of International Business Education. In 2002,
the Journal of Business Ethics ranked him as the leading European author on
publications related to business ethics.
The new “la Caixa” Chair of Corporate Social
Responsibility and Corporate Goverance is the third of similar chairs in IESE,
which also has the Grupo Santander Chair of Financial Institutions &
Corporate Governance, and a Chair of Ethics, Economics and Business, previously
held by Dr. Argandoña.

Call for proposals: Marie Curie Conferences and Training Courses
Issued by: European Commission, DG Research
Deadline: 17/05/2005
Average budget: between 180,000 EUR and 1,400,000 EUR (based on first call)
Start implementation: On average 6 months after deadline
Statistics first call (2 deadlines):
347 proposals, 316 eligible, 31 funded (11%)
399 proposals, 373 eligible, 30 funded (8%)
Description/object of the call for proposals:
The European Commission has launched the 4th call for proposals for
Marie Curie Conferences and Training Courses (FP6-2006-Mobility-4) as
part of the Human resources and mobility activity area.
The 4th call is implemented as a ‘Series of Events’ (SCF)
for the purpose of providing training primarily to researchers with up
to ten years of experience. Projects (series of events: conferences and
training courses) should enable junior researchers to benefit from the
experience of leading researchers. Support will be given to specific
training activities (including virtual ones) that highlight particular
European achievements and interests.
This action concentrates on measures to support the
organisation of coherent series of training courses and/or conferences
with a specific training value, as well as the funding of the
participation of eligible researchers in these events.
Events can last from a few days to a few weeks, and are to be
presented as a single proposal by one or more organisers and covering
one or more particular subjects.
The events should highlight either particular European
achievements in research or alternatively research topics in which
Europe has a strong interest and where the event contributes to its
uptake in Europe. This means that the subjects to be discussed or
taught should be those where recent advances achieved in the Member
States or Associated States are worth being passed on to researchers in
the early stages of their career, or those where recent advances
achieved elsewhere, in topics of interest to Europe, need to be passed
on to researchers from the Member States and Associated States. In both
cases, the
foreseen composition of the audience and the identity of the speakers
will be a factor in determining the Community added value.

The latest McKinsey Quarterly
global survey finds that executives around the world overwhelmingly embrace the
idea that the role of corporations in society goes far beyond simply meeting
obligations to shareholders. More than four out of five respondents agree that
generating high returns for investors should be accompanied by broader
contributions to the public good -- for example, providing good jobs, making
philanthropic donations, and going beyond legal requirements to minimize
pollution and other negative effects of business. Only one in six agrees with
the thesis advanced by Nobel laureate Milton Friedman, that high returns should
be a corporation's sole focus, the survey found.
According to McKinsey, executives
are hard-nosed about why companies are engaging in this new agenda. Only 8
percent think that large corporations champion social or environmental causes
out of 'genuine concern.' Almost nine in ten agree that they are motivated by
public relations or profitability, or by both concern and business benefits in
equal measure.
McKinsey says the most
enthusiastic proponents of a social role for business are executives in India:
90 percent of them endorse the "public good" dimension. Executives based in
China are the most lukewarm, with 25 percent saying that investor returns should
be the sole focus of corporate activity. Looking ahead, the survey finds,
executives expect that a wide range of concerns will dominate public and
political debates. Asked which three issues will have the most impact, for
better or worse, on the shareholder value of companies in their industries
during the next five years, 41 percent choose job loss and offshoring. Also at
the top of many minds are corporate political influence and involvement;
environmental issues, including climate change; pension and retirement benefits;
and privacy and data security.
Two years ago,

with European Business Ethics Network (EBEN) on
