14th International Symposium on Ethics, Business and Society, Call for Papers
14th International Symposium on Ethics, Business and Society hosted by IESE Business School, University of Navarra in Barcelona, Spain, on May 18-19, 2006.
Topic: TOWARDS A COMPREHENSIVE INTEGRATION OF ETHICS INTO MANAGEMENT: PROBLEMS AND PROSPECTS.
Deadlines: January 15, 2006: Paper proposal
February 15, 2006: Response of acceptance of the proposal
April 10, 2006: Full papers
Rationale
Business Ethics and Ethics in Management have already devoted considerable attention to dealing with ethical dilemmas and particular ethical issues. However, we are still far from a comprehensive integration of ethics into management theories and managerial practices.
Recently, many leading managerial theories, such as agency theory, transaction costs theory, institutional theory and others have received much criticism. They have been accused of fostering egoistic behavior in managers and even of having contributed to well-known financial scandals (see, e.g., Academy of Management Learning & Education, March 2005).
In response to this, the purpose of this Symposium is to explore the problems of current management theories and practices, and the prospects for improving them. At the same time, new proposals for a more comprehensive integration of ethics into management are welcome.

CSR Platform Workshop: Building Bridges between Fundamental and Applied Business Disciplines on CSR
On Wednesday 26th of October, Copenhagen Business School (CBS), Denmark, in partnership with the Centre for Corporate Values and Responsibility (CVR) is organizing a workshop in Copenhagen, Denmark. Academic research on corporate social responsibility (CSR) requires an integrated approach in understanding these complex realities. Nevertheless, CSR research to date has largely failed to draw from and be integrated into the applied business disciplines or fundamental scholarly disciplines. This workshop aims to explore some of the barriers and opportunities for broadening the scope of CSR research in discussion with leading scholars specialising in these areas, as well as those from applied business disciplines and fundamental disciplines from Europe and around the world.
Using stakeholder theory as a heuristic method in this workshop, participants will explore how the use of applied-fundamental research (AFR) can contribute to improving CSR research. Based on a key note presentation on the topic, by Professor Edward Freeman, a panel of researchers from fundamental and applied business disciplines will articulate and discuss the challenges and opportunities associated with AFR when studying CSR issues. Moreover, the potential of using stakeholder theory as a means or a method for future AFR inspiration and collaboration will inherently be addressed. Panelists and participants will contribute personal experiences and suggestions to develop 'Collective Steps Forward' during the final session Chaired by Professor Nigel Roome.
The workshop is open and places are free of charge due to the funding of the European Commission of the CSR Platform project, however, online registration is required (here. Travel and accommodation is not included and participants should make their own arrangements.
Numbers for this meeting are limited so please apply (via website) as soon as possible, but no later than 15 October 2005, if you want to be assured of a place. To find out more information about the event, please click here.
Ashridge is pleased to announce the launch of a new programme that has been specifically designed to meet the development needs of today's corporate responsibility manager. Its design has been shaped by the joint research with the Corporate Responsibility Group into the development needs of practitioners and in particular meeting the challenges of integrating CR across their organisations.
The programme explores the links between business strategy, organisational culture and CR. It also examines trends in risk management, marketing and corporate communications as well as what these mean for CR practitioners. A key feature of the programme is developing the skills that practitioners believe they currently need, particularly engaging with and influencing colleagues across their organisations, and a focus on exploring the challenges that participants are currently facing in their organisations.
The three-day programme will be run this year between 7-9 December and more information can be found at "www.ashridge.com/icr
CSR Platform workshop on enhancing knowledge and research on CSR in Europe

enabling greater involvement in jointly shaping, conducting and disseminating
research that is of high value to those working on CSR in Europe.
It involves senior practitioners and
academics in a series of highly interactive multi-stakeholder workshops where
participants work in facilitated small groups to explore innovative approaches
to identifying knowledge needs, jointly collaborating on research, and
effectively communicating new knowledge. The focus for the day

research community. It will also allow you to play a role in enhancing
dissemination mechanisms so that new knowledge that will help you meet your
challenges will be more effectively communicated to you. Academic researchers: do your research interests include
CSR and changing expectations of the role of business in society. Is hearing
from front-line practitioners about their knowledge needs of value to you?

Special Issue of Corporate Social Responsibility and Environmental Management
(Guest Editor: Anja Schaefer, Open University, UK)
Theme “Constructing social and environmental issues: The interface between industry, government and civil society”
Corporate social and environmental responsibility is not purely or even primarily an internal organizational matter for private companies. Rather, the issues it deals with, and the assignment of roles and responsibilities are discursively constructed at the interface between different social actors. Of course, powerful companies pursue their economic advantage but this also necessitates the pursuit of legitimacy and the protection of brand value against consumer or governmental reaction.
We are seeking quality empirical and/or theoretical contributions to a special issue of Corporate Social Responsibility and Environmental Management that examine the construction of social and environmental responsibilities at the interface between industry, government and civil society.
Type of papers sought
Papers may be theoretical or empirical in nature. Empirical articles should build on a strong theoretical framework.
Papers may take a national, cross-cultural or international focus.
Ideally, papers will look at the perspective of two or more social actors, which could include industry, government and its agencies, civil society institutions (e.g. NGOs), etc.
Papers may look at a variety of different environmental and social issues.
While it is anticipated that many submissions will focus on (sectors of) industry as one of the social actors studied, this is not required and papers may equally examine (the interaction between) other social actors, such as government and civil society institutions.
No specific methodological approaches are stipulated although it is anticipated that various qualitative and interpretive methods, including various forms of discourse analysis, will be appropriate.
Topics may include, but are not limited to the following:
The ‘discovery’, maintenance and/or disappearance of particular environmental or social ‘problems’
The definition of particular social issues for particular industry sectors
Differential understandings of the definition, significance, etc. of particular issues by different social actors
The negotiation of solutions to particular problems, including public policy and legislation
The (changing) ‘ownership’ of social and environmental problems
Submission Guidelines
Articles submitted for this special issue will be subject to the normal double-blind peer-review process.
Submissions should be in English, on A4 paper, double spaced, font size pt.12. Papers should be between 3500 and 6000 words in length. They should include the following:
A title page (including full title, short title of up to 70 characters, and names and affiliations of all authors, the full address, including email, telephone and fax, of the corresponding author who is to check the proofs); the name(s) of any sponsors of the research contained in the paper, along with grant number(s); an abstract of up to 150 words for all articles except book reviews; up to eight keywords that describe your paper for indexing purposes.
In addition, authors should follow all the guidelines for authors provided on the CSREM website at http://interscience.wiley.com.
Submissions should be made in electronic format (as a Word file) to the guest editor, Anja Schaefer (a.schaefer@open.ac.uk).
A conference organized by the European Commission - Brussels, 12-13 December 2005.
This major European conference will address the question of what strategies for social sciences and humanities are needed in Europe, and what are the best options for developing and implementing such strategies.
Based on past research and with the participation of internationally renowned researchers, it will discuss the elaboration of European research agendas in three interrelated areas which represent major challenges for the EU and span the breadth of the social science and humanities issues expressed in the Commission's proposals for the 7th Framework programme.
